Several posters slandering land and environment defenders were posted outside Sta. Ana Church in Davao City’s proper earlier this August. Among the faces involved were environment advocates Ms. Meggie Nolasco and Dr. Jean Lindo. Ms. Nolasco was a former staff in CEC while Dr. Lindo is a member of the Environmental Defenders Congress, which was co-convened by CEC.
The Center for Environmental Concerns-Philippines (CEC) vehemently condemns how the government is taking advantage of the pandemic to push a law that is unconstitutional and does not even address the public health and ecological crisis, but criminalizes dissent and terrorizes the people, including environmental defenders.
Center for Environmental Concerns – Philippines condemns the abduction of Elen Tijamo, Program Coordinator of Sustainable Agriculture from Central Visayas Farmers Development Center (FARDEC), on June 13, 2020 and it is suspected that it was done by state forces. According to human rights group Karapatan, the abductors were reported to be four men with rifles and two women with masks on. Elen was abducted around 8:00PM in her home in Barangay Kampingganon, Bantayan, Cebu.
We, members of the Environmental Defenders Congress oppose the railroading of the Anti-Terror Bill titled “An Act to Prevent, Prohibit and Penalize Terrorism, thereby Repealing Republic Act No. 9372, Otherwise Known as the Human Security Act.” The bill when passed will worsen the situation of environment and human rights defenders in the country.
